DAEMONIAC are an Italian band formed in 2013 and this is their debut full-length. These guys play a very brutal Death Metal that owes much (or nearly everything, really) to the scene that was spawned in Sweden in the early nineties. I was perhaps most of all reminded of VOMITORY in their intense barrage of ear-raping flak. Sure, there are some moments of calm, such as the cinematographic and eerie piano intro to 'Procreation Of Hatred' or the slower Death / Doom entrance of 'Cursed Hecatomb', but these are fleeting moments trapped inside a sonic massacre, a Metal war raging around you. Truth is DAEMONIAC may have very little originality to be found, but they do very well what they do. Even the distortion and general production is an obvious reproduction of their Swedish masters, with aggressive drumming, cavernous vocals (often without any discernible utterances for anyone lacking a lyric sheet) and very heavy downtuned guitars, including fine riffs (but I did miss soloing!). They even end the album with 'Cremation', a MACRODEX cover back from 1990 whose Death Metal identity is fully upheld in DAEMONIAC’s version, very close to the original but with a modern quality production. The cover artwork was drawn by none other than Chris Moyen, a name strongly associated with Black and Death Metal underground releases since the old days. It depicts a kind of angel-demon (goes with the band name), something that Moyen must be very used to drawing, and in fact their lyrics are very much connected to blasphemy and general anti-Christian themes. So, to sum it up, if you are a maniac for VOMITORY, DISMEMBER and the likes, this is right up your alley.

What I Like: The usual draw of good OSDM: insanely loud distortion, a mix of crusty drums with seering blackened tremolos. The snare roll transitions and jumps to blastbeats are absolutely ferocious. I think the drumming may be my favorite aspect of this album, though it is certainly rivaled by the vocals. These indecipherable grunts are truly repulsive. It's like they said, "F#$k having a frontman, let's just fill the garbage disposal with raw meat and shards of glass and see what comes out."
What I Don't Like: It's more than a tad repetetive and for the love of whatever god or demon you worship, less is more. No track in this style needs to be 7 minutes long. Feel free to prove me wrong, but the evidence is not here.
The Verdict: Not the most exciting OSDM release I've heard, but still one with enough thrills and grotesquery to keep me coming back. Check it out for yourself below.

Demoniac gab es viele, aber Daemoniac nur einmal. Allein das Cover macht unbeirrbar klar, worum es hier geht: Es gibt klassischen Death Metal der guten, alten Schweden-Schule auf die Ohren. Dabei sind Daemoniac Italiener. Zusammengefunden haben sie erst 2013. Nach einer EP im Jahr 2015, auf der sie auch „Chunks Of Flesh“ von den schwedischen Crematory gecovert haben, ist „Spawn Of The Fallen“ also das Debüt der Band. Der ausgewählte Coversong war seinerzeit kein Zufall. Sein spielen Schweden Death der düsteren Art, wie eben Crematory, aber auch Grotesque, Grave, Nirvana 2002, Interment, Nihilist oder auch neuere Bands wie ihre Landsleute von Profanal, aber auch die Spanier Graveyard oder die deutschen Obscure Infinity. Der Sound ist druckvoll, aber immer rotzig. Man kommt sich vor wie auf einer Zeitreise in die Vergangenheit. Auch wenn sie noch eine recht junge Band sind, lebt der alte Spirit tatschlich authentisch in ihrer Musik weiter. Old School Death Metaller wissen, was sie zu tun haben.
Wat soll ich gross schreiben, ich denke jeder weiss wie das klingt...
HM2-driven Death Metal schwedischer Prägung, mit dem Unterschied das die Jungs aus Italien kommen.
Trotzdem eine Empfehlung? Klar, da man bei den Jungs Herzblut und Begeisterung raushört. Man spürt das sie nicht nur was nachspielen weil es eben grad im Trend ist sondern das sie das tun weil sie richtig Bock drauf haben. Und neben der ausreichenden Dosis Schwedentod klingt das Ganze auch noch schön dreckig und deftig, die Jungs legen Wert drauf das man auch noch die Death Metal Basis raushört, das darf auch ruhig mal etwas moderner klingen.
Somit zwar kein must-have da jeder bestimmt schon zehnzig Kapellen im Schrank hat die ähnlich tönen, aber kaufen kann man "Spawn of the Fallen" dennoch bedenkenlos. Auch weil das Album noch durch ein gelungenes MACRODEX Cover abgerundet wird. Zudem unterstützt ihr durch den Kauf eine ehrliche und leidenschaftliche Truppe und nicht irgendeine Plastikkapelle von grossen Labels.
We don’t know if you feel like you’re winning today, or if you feel like the world is coming to an end. If you spent less time worrying about American politics, and more time worrying about the future of Old School Death Metal, we at Archaic Triad feel quite confident that you would feel pretty great right about now. “Tired of winning”, and all that. Our previously discussed Twitter hashtag, #OldSchoolDeathMetalRevival2017, is looking less and less like a desperate plea, and more and more like a prediction of the type that will put us in the history books.
The Milano outfit Daemoniac was put together in 2013, with the obvious intent of making sure that the music of Nihilist and Crematory should live on, even if future events eradicated all traces of those bands and their recordings. On Spawn of the Fallen, Daemoniac have done a smashing job. If the cover and logo don’t do it for you, what happens when you turn it on should. A brief 80s horror intro sets the mood – gloomy keyboards meet some creepy noises playing backwards, and then the strings of “Macabre Eucharist” starts riffing over wild, early Entombed-style drums.
This is far from the hyper tense, almost electronic sound of most modern brutal death metal. While the performance as such is pretty much water tight, the sound is utterly organic. Cymbals clank and jingle, there’s plenty of filth in the distorted guitar work, and while the double kick drum is there from time to time, it’s semi-buried in a complete sound picture, rather than almost dominating it.
The vocals are legitimate growls of a real man voice. Despite our reactionary tone in these matters, we are in fact not at all opposed to more inhuman varieties of death metal vocals – the inward sucking insanity of Goregrind vox, or the straight up digital pitch down of certain other more or less reputable bands do speak to us. Still, a real monster of an Italian roaring out lyrics about being “Regurgitated from Hell” (the second track of the album) can only warm your heart.
The album is released by Xtreem Music, a Madrid label who’ve managed to snag the “666” P.O. Box at the local post office. The label was founded in 2002, but through clever use of time travel it has managed to regularly spend many a vacation in the early 1990s. Perhaps it was during one of these that they found Daemoniac, and brought them to our time. When “Cursed Hecatomb” rolls into our ears we know that this was a wise move, and that the brilliant scientists who provided Xtreem with the technological wherewithal to undertake this bold project were right to do so. If this keeps up, by the time For the Fallen drops in march, the #OldSchoolDeathMetalRevival2017 will already be well under way.
I find it to always be a good thing to always return to the basics after a certain amount of time. In my case, the basics happen to be some old fashioned death metal that isn’t fancy in any sort of way but instead is just brutal, fast, and chaos incarnate all the fucking time. No country does that better than Sweden in my opinion, and it’s the new act of Daemoniac that only further solidifies that belief of mine.
It’s a pretty well-known fact that it’s a band’s debut album that is their most important simply because it shows what this new band has to offer and what we can come to expect from them should they make the decision to create more material. In the case of Daemonic and their debut of “Spawn of the Fallen” that’s still so new, it’s sparkling, these guys have an album that doesn’t bring a single thing to the table in terms of innovation or anything that could be even remotely considered as stylistically unique. That being said, this record is a fantastic slab of death metal straight from the old school that fucking shreds and delivers one hundred fucking percent! The entirety of what Daemoniac has made here is exactly what any person who’s enjoyed the original sound of death metal, and yet even though I’ve heard that sound so many times before today Daemoniac still made it an extremely entertaining ride that doesn’t let up for even a nanosecond in the whole of the 43 minutes that “Spawn of the Fallen” elapses. And to really put the blood icing on this rotten cake, Daemoniac managed to throw in a cover of Macrodex’s “Cremation” at the very end, and it’s a damn good cover if I’ve ever seen one, and it serves as a brilliant end to a staggeringly brutal album.
The label of Xtreem Music has always been highly reliable when it comes to finding some of the most extreme (ha – get it?) the underground scenes of the world have to offer, so them finding the fresh talent of Daemoniac is something that is absolutely textbook for the Spanish label. “Spawn of the Fallen” is a terrific debut for this sort of band, as it shows that Daemoniac isn’t fucking around one bit and that they mean real business with their death metal. And I’m definitely keen to hear more!
