Crushing 3rd album that completes the trilogy of 6 songs in each album!! Intense, dark, dense and heavy Death Metal with the already own style of the band, longer songs and less fast, but more varied and full of power!! Their 3rd masterpiece!!
Mysterious bands are always fascinating, be it in the way the band members present themselves, the concept of their music, or the music itself. In the case of Vidres A La Sang the group has taken a language called Catalan, supposedly a strain of Spanish, and weaved their music around it. The music itself is very engaging; it has the fantic speed of black metal and the crunch of death metal, with touches of creepy ambience to keep the listener on their toes. Combined with some deathly scary vocals, Som is a dark journey that will please almost any death metal fan.
The first thing to notice about Som is that it is epic. "Som" opens up with a doom metal riff before a very ambient keyboard section comes in with the vocals growl over like some demonic priest giving a sermon. Then, the drums and blastbeats kick in with the guitars and the song just takes off from there. There's a few black metal riffs thrown into the mix that try to drown out the vocals, but they stay sharp and evil all the way through. The ambience picks up again in the middle, creepier and even more mystical than before with the vocals before going back to the metal riffage. Expect a lot of this throughout the album. "Policromia" is more of a straight up mid paced death metal track that churns it way along with speed laced drums and the brutal death metal vocals. As said before, they are groweld in a different language and are unintelligible. "Esclaus..." is still pretty brtual death metal, but the keyboards are mixed in the background amongst the chugging riffs, bringing back a bit of the atmosphere heard on the first song. "A'lombra" slows things down a bit, especially around the two minute mark where the band forsakes the blastbeats and riffs for some string pickings which is even more eerie than the keyboards. There's also a nice solo here too before the death metal fury comes back in. "El Crit" is not unlike the second or third track in the sense it is more death metal than ambient, but the riffs are superb and the drumming is enough to get anyone's head banging. Vocals are brutal as ever and cut a perfect swath through the ear, in a good way. "No Tonare a Ser Jove," the longest track on the album, offers one more ambient surprise for the album: badly done piano. When I saw badly done it sounds like some psychotic person is raking their nails across the piano and about to do something disturbing. It's extremely effective in the sense of the band going for a more horror like death metal than brutal death metal. It is perfectly fitting because the listener is drawn into the music and then BAM, the death metal comes back at full force and makes one jump. Before the song winds down there's some quiet guitar work with the keyboards that make for an excellent closer.
Altogether, some fantastically well done ambient blackened death metal. The songs are a bit long so it takes some focus to get fully engaged with the music. Fortunately, the brutality never lets up and the music is varied enough to keep that attention. Som is a good piece for metal fans to contemplate, or just rock out to. Fans of EA, Deathspell Omega, and other twisted acts like early Vital Remains will find this another gem to add to their collections.
Hace tiempo, hablando con Eloi, cabeza principal de VIDRES A LA SANG, me explicó que el grupo era un “desafío a la muerte”. Tanto por motivos personales, como musicales, el guitarrista y cantante de la banda catalana, consideraba que VIDRES A LA SANG era la forma que tenía de sacar fuera todo el temor y al mismo tiempo toda la curiosidad sobre el final terrenal del ser humano. Pues bien, después de acercarse al borde de esta fase de toda vida conocida, en el debut homónimo (¡cuánto tiempo ha pasado ya!) aquél en el que Martí i Pol servía de causa lírica a toda la música del grupo, y después de alcanzar casi la comunión con el otro lado en “Endins”, la trayectoria ascendente de VIDRES A LA SANG culmina esta trilogía, buscada o casual, de tres discos de seis temas cada uno, cual celebración de la existencia de Lucifer, con “Som”. Y antes que nada, decir que si hay serio candidato a disco del año este 2009, rácano como pocos hasta ahora, por supuesto a nivel nacional, pero también a nivel internacional, ése es “Som”. Obsesivamente, desde hace días, no hace más que dar vueltas en mi cabeza y cada vez aprecio un nuevo detalle que me hace disfrutarlo más.
El estilo de VIDRES A LA SANG, al igual que su imagen roja en destino, negra en venganza, nunca ha sido fácil de enclavar. Partiendo de un Death Metal denso, a medio tiempo, mórbido y cargado de rítmica poderosa, voluptuosa y envolvente, el grupo se rodeaba de épica, de solos cada vez más trabajados y virtuosos, cortesía de Albert, y de una frialdad congeladora que cada vez conseguía embrujar más. Sin presumir de técnica apabullante, ni desarrollos cansinos y tortuosos, VIDRES A LA SANG mantenía en vilo al oyente y construía una personalidad propia que aunque siempre se ha definido como mezcla entre MORBID ANGEL, IMMORTAL e IRON MAIDEN, por aquello de citar tres referencias de los tres estilos de los que bebe, nunca ha tenido parangón claro en la escena. Si esto ya se intuía en su debut, “Endins” no hizo más que confirmarlo, de tal manera que el grupo podía presumir de sonar a VIDRES A LA SANG, de tener tantos fieles adoradores, como detractores, en definitiva, de crear su propio camino, primero musicalmente, pero también líricamente, dejando su homenaje inicial a Martí i Pol a un lado.
Esta trayectoria se vio apagada momentáneamente, durante mucho tiempo de silencio apacible y contemplativo en el que muchos aguardábamos el retorno de VIDRES A LA SANG, la confirmación definitiva. Mucho tiempo, pocas noticias... pero por fin aquí está “Som”. Y ¡qué decir!, viendo crecer a un grupo, ser testigo de su perfeccionamiento y su evolución, uno puede pecar de no ser objetivo y llevarse por el corazón, pero sinceramente “Som” es algo grande. VIDRES A LA SANG realmente ha desafiado por completo a la muerte en este tercer disco, metiéndose de lleno en su faceta más intensa, más densa, más Doom (seguramente MY DYING BRIDE, AGALLOCH y similares forman parte de la discoteca personal de Eloi y compañía), pero sin brusquedad, sin cambio con respecto al pasado, simplemente un paso más, un paso hacia lo que mejor sabían hacer: envolvernos de sonidos cavernosos y profundamente envolventes.
Hay temas para todos los gustos, algunos en donde el minutaje, que hasta ahora no pasaba de los seis o siete minutos, alcanza cotas que superan los dos dígitos en sendas obras maestras como son “Esclaus De La Modenitat”, toda una lección de cómo combinar fiereza, densidad, horror y melancolía, con algunos de los momentos más bellos por parte de la guitarra de Albert, o sobre todo la que se puede considerar como la clave de “Som”, “No Tornaré A Ser Jove”, un tema desgarrador, enlazado misteriosamente con una nueva referencia a Martí i Pol en su segunda parte, “Mireume Bé, Sóc l' altre”, tal y como nos explicaba Eloi en una reciente entrevista, un conjunto tortuoso, construido y deconstruido una y otra vez, donde los teclados y las atmósferas, nuevo elemento de acompañamiento ocasional en VIDRES A LA SANG y que también aparecen en la difícil pero satisfactoria apertura homónima del disco, nos llevarán de la mano. Otros temas buscan un sonido más directo, más propio del pasado de la banda, como la pegadiza y profundamente groove “Policromia”, todo un escaparate para el headbanging, o “El Crit”. Finalmente, también hay espacio para la experimentación armónica, para sonidos enigmáticos y nuevas lecciones por parte de Albert en “A L´ombra”. Como se puede ver, estamos ante un disco muy completo.
Envuelve todo lo dicho en un sonido que supera al ya de por sí sobresaliente “Endins” (ha merecido la pena la espera en este sentido), añade la vuelta de Carles a la batería, menos “impresionante” en directo que Alfred Berengena, pero más compactado con el estilo de VIDRES A LA SANG. Y es entonces cuando viene mi único punto negro, por aquello de no decir todo alabanzas: una portada manifiestamente mejorable, donde la referencia a Dalí se queda en un batiburrillo de ideas que no llego a comprender y que relegan el propio nombre de la banda a un segundo plano. Pero vamos, muy desesperado tengo que estar por encontrar un “fallo” al disco para resaltar este aspecto visual, porque “Som” es, lisa y llanamente, PERFECTO. Lo dicho, hasta el momento, lo mejor de este 2009 para el que suscribe.
