Comment:
1st full length album by this german band, one of the maximum exponents of the new wave of ancient-sounding Death Metal. 16 songs mixed in Sweden by tomas Skogsberg, this album gathers a wide spectrum of influences from bands like MORGOTH, ASPHYX, UNLEASHED, OBITUARY, DISMEMBER, PESTILENCE, CEMETARY... Undoubtely one of the best albums in this genre for the whole 2010!! A future classic!!

A potem rusza posępna maszyna „Adrift Beyond”. A prące naprzód utwory „Enter The Crematorium” i „Toxic Mutilation” (pięknie wyryczany refren) są wręcz esencją „Adrift Beyond”. „Adrift Beyond” to doskonały album, ponury, posępny, tchnący surowością i stęchlizną, grobowy, można rzec. O tak, dobre to ostatnie określenie! Miejcie baczenie na MANDATORY!
Mortem [5/6]
Cosmos Gaming Webzine (usa) 21.12.2010
After releasing numerous demos and EP’s, German death metal band Mandatory has finally put out their debut full length album nine years after they formed. Entitled Adrift Beyond, the effort features sixteen songs that follow the traditional Swedish death metal mold but occasionally try to inject some melodic touches into the mix. The end results show quite a bit of potential, but sometimes when the group jumps too far into the standard formula they become a little too generic and this does hurt the album a little bit.

They may be from Germany, but Mandatory’s instrumentalists have a clear Swedish influence. Many of the riffs on Adrift Beyond have that buzzsaw guitar tone that classic bands like Entombed and Dismember are known for. But rather than creating sixteen tracks that feel like they have been ripped out of the 90’s, the instrumentalists have actually tried to find their own sound and have integrated keyboards and some other melodic death metal touches into the mix. It might sound a bit strange at first, but listeners will realize after they’ve gotten through the entire album that the moments where the group was able to create a contrast between monstrous lumbering riffs and soft melodies were the ones they remembered the most. There are some tracks where the group decides to go pure old school death metal and only use the heavier tones, but for some reason their songwriting abilities aren’t quite as strong when they’re not fusing together melody and aggression.

Mandatory’s vocalist has an extremely low and distorted growl that is reminiscent of genre favorites such as Martin van Drunen. This style makes the group’s music instantly appealing, as it has that feeling of aggression and intensity that death metal fans look for when deciding whether a band is good or not. Admittedly the growling doesn’t have quite as much range as it could as it tends to stay at guttural lows for much of the album, but most listeners will find that the vocals never become repetitive or grating. Mandatory may remind you of a number of other bands with their growls, but I can’t think of a vocal style that is better suited to their material and considering that their singer is consistently strong and in your face this isn’t a bad thing.

The combination of old school death metal with modern melodic death metal has been attempted before, but Mandatory has found a way to do it that sounds unique. Admittedly they don’t do this consistently throughout the album, as there are songs where the mixture really takes off and others where it doesn’t feel as though it has been explored enough. But if the instrumentalists can continue to experiment and move this sound forward then they will likely become one of my favorites in the years to come. As of right now they’re definitely consistent though, and if having keyboards in your death metal doesn’t put you off then consider giving Adrift Beyond a shot.

God damned! “Adrift Beyond” gives you the feeling of holding an album in your hands that could have been released in the very early 90ies by a label like BLACK fuckin’ MARK Records. MANDATORY did their homework in classical Death Metal research and if you get deeper and deeper into the material you’ll recognize that the quartet really worked hard on the arrangements to give them an authentic vibe. The totally midtempo based album really has a sort of natural flow and doesn’t sound convulsive at all. No blasting!!! No modern crap!!! Expect on the one hand heavy and neck ripping riffings in the vein of ASPHYX, BOLT THROWER, early GOREFEST and on the other side you hear the almost classical Swedish styled melodic injection of the goldy old works of EDGE OF SANITY or DESULTORY. Getting no one else than the godfather of the Stockholm Death Metal sound Tomas Skogsberg for the mix and mastering duties was a really wise choice. This is actually the second Death Metal releases in ages (after the debut of MR. DEATH) that got fingered in SUNLIGHT Studios. Without doubt Skogsberg still holds the key for such productions. You even get partwise the classical additional atmospheric keyboards that were typical for productions back then. Critically seen “Adrift Beyond” isn’t really the most violent album in its intensity since the material is really reflected and structured in its arrangements, so don’t expect any of those AUTOPY clone bands releases. All in all it feels like listening to an album of the heydays of 90ies Death Metal, but hey we’re living in 2010, so in the mission of transfering that particular style MANDATORY accoomplished their mission. Next to the release of LIFELESS this album gonna be one of the hottest exports from Germany on the old school Death Metal sector, so do what you have to do: B.U.Y!!!
