Comment:
Killer debut album by this finnish band of pure Death Metal that follows the tradition of legendary countrymates like FUNEBRE, ADRAMELECH, DEMIGOD, DEPRAVITY... yet with a slight swedish touch in some riffs.
Another band that is probably easy to relate by just looking at the cover art, band name and lyrics. Yeah, gore! And add to that a very heavy and brutal Death Metal machine. Actually this is a lot better than I expected as I was expecting it to be more in the American brutal Death Metal style, but no, this is actually more closer to Swedish CREMATORY, BALVAZ, UTUMNO with references to early SUFFOCATION and IMMOLATION. The buzzing downtuned guitars are doing chunky and fat riffs without going into chaos, more into a controlled faster and mid paced aura, yet very crushing. These five gore obsessed people from Finland have created a very strong album for their debut, which is also suffocating and obscure, yet with some very catchy riffs and memorable songs. If you like the works of bands like KRYPTS or CORPSESSED I will suggest you to add this one on your list for all-gore no-fun Death bloodsoaked Metal.
Amputory play Old-School Death Metal, and they play it very well indeed.
The singer has a deep guttural growl that sounds like concrete breaking. He uses enjoyable vocal patterns and his voice is just the right side of illegible.
The music has a good groove and there are some nice chuggy riffs that are fat and brutal enough to get the head banging easily. The riffs come thick and fast, making the tracks thoroughly engaging. They also know when to put their foot on the accelerator where necessary and just give it some blasting.
The songs are strong and memorable. The Old-School style lives or dies by its songs as it doesn’t have the pure brutality/technicality/whatever of other sub-genres to fall back on. In this respect it’s a very honest style and Amputory shine due to the well-structured and well-written songs on Ode to Gore.
The band have a very satisfying production and Ode to Gore sounds great. This gives the songs the necessary freedom to crush and maim with impunity.
Some Old-School Death Metal can sound a bit stale, but Amputory have perfected their mixture it seems, as Ode to Gore has a brightness and spring in its step that belies the classic nature of the sub-genre. Amputory may be Old-School but they sound born of the here-and-now; this is still bloodily relevant music.
I heartily suggest that you give this a listen, you won’t regret it.
"From that Gore" is the first album of the band. For me, the fan of 90th in death metal, I can say, it is well done. The combination of thrash, cool melodies and darkness is fine for me. The tombs are opened again, Christ has to stand on the cross and Satan and the Death invite you to a never-ending dance. The Finns showed clear that in their country there is underground in turmoil. I am very happy that I got this board into my hand. I will praise it always and everywhere. I like the incredible honesty, old school sound and morbid ideas. Hell opened its door once again! Welcome to the country where Satan lives. This is how I imagine the true, unsophisticated death metal! Massacre!
“Ode To Gore” is Amputory’s full-length debut in 2015. This Finland band is bringing back the old school death metal sounds and I can only say the drumming is on point: the mid-tempo double bass, the use of ride cymbals for accents. The album begins with a really clear sound of a creaky door closing and we are engulf in death metal goodness, with lyrics about pedophilia and the burying of dead babies in the backyard. At the end, the protagonist kills the child too, all in the name of playing God. Also, in “Aghori”, there is a great tribal instrumental solo at the end with percussions, a sitar and even Tibetan throat singing. Throughout the album, there is great vocal, wonderful guitar playing and headbanging-worthy hooks. Trust me, they are really catchy. What I particularly enjoy is how long they repeat a single riff- enough to get you into the groove of the track but not so long that it bores you.
At times, there are really revealing lyrics that break away from the usual murder and gore. Listening to “Cleansing By The Blade” made me feel really uncomfortable. The singer sung about people self-mutilates to make themselves feel better, as a rite, a ritual. The bluntness of the lyrics made it feel almost like a journal entry and we were given a peek at a pained soul’s life.
However, there were certain tracks like “Enslaved In The Basement” where the production was too clean, causing the atmosphere to feel too safe. The imagery of the lyrics would be better shown if those tracks has a grimier production. And lastly, I feel like the bass can be amped up, it was often overshadowed by the other instrumentations, making the track lose some low-ends.
In the end, this is good debut by our Finnish friends, with a great variety of themes and painfully honest lyrics at time. Hope to see their production level improve in their next release.
