3rd album of super-amazing and mega-brutal french masters of Death Metal!! Astonishing production, this album will crush everything on its path!! For fans of CRYPTOPSY, (old) DECAPITATED, SUFFOCATION...
Kronos is a French band on a Spanish label that writes lyrics about Greek mythology, and they recorded âThe Hellenic Terrorâ in Polandâs Hertz studio. What is more important than Kronos being multicultural is that this quintet continues to evolve with each album. The instrumental accuracy is unmistakable, they are technical without losing a smash mouth thrashing style, and the lyrical ideas are well developed. Simply stated: Kronos are multitasking Death Metal gods.
Going by the paragraph above is enough that you all should already be ordering âThe Hellenic Terror,â but some of you are smartly skeptical so lets get to the albums highlights: Drums are unreal to the point I almost donât know how to describe the play. Blast beats are intelligently placed to convey gloom and sheer heaviness, which is an approach pioneered by Old School bands. Fills are tight and almost jazzy in compliment to the rumbling bass. The whole kit is played in a variance of speeds that comes across fluidly natural. The effect is blasting when necessary and crisp rhythmic pulsations below guitar solos. Riffs are layered, almost scientific, and seamless, but are compelling for the fact that they never sound like forced wanking. Tempo changes give the music enough chops for headbanging, that listeners might miss the precision. The guitar tone is sharper than a cleaver, and when amalgamated with those brilliant riffs, the effect is like being buried alive under a falling skyscraper. Guitar solos are at once beautifully poignant and sadistically punishing. This method enhances tumbling riffage while showcasing the bands unadulterated professionalism. Thrash sections of tracks crash and mash with pinch harmonics snapping a whip across awestruck ears. Vocals match the instrumental pillaging in a submerged snarl like a Depth Charge booming against a submarines hull, and gagging shrieks sound almost Grindcore in counter effect.
In terms of polished skill and all out musical wizardry without being unabashedly pretentious, similarities between âThe Hellenic Terrorâ and contemporary LPâs like âBloodthirst,â âSymbolic,â and âLeading Visionâ are dead on. As for what bands Kronos is similar to in sound, Iâll leave that type of broad arguing up to fans that need a niche mentality to help their questionable decision making process. Regardless, âThe Hellenic Terrorâ is a captivating recording from itâs skillfully polished production to dexterous musicianship bursting with hints of technicality, Thrash, Old School portent, and modern brutality in an equilibrium of perfection, that would make a tight rope artist envious.
