DARK FUTURE is right if the beastly apparition that adorns the albums cover ever comes to pass, we’d all be screwed!
This is the second album from Spanish thrashers RANCOR and has been put out by fellow Spaniards XTREEM MUSIC. As dramatic as their artwork surely is, their music more than matches it and the bands old school brand of thrash is tinged with a truly spectacular atmospheric and suspense building melody. Similar in sound to SACRED REICH especially where the vocals are concerned, RANCOR blaze away at full speed whilst littering their music with wandering solos!
Superbly executed and well produced also, RANCOR play a powerful and engaging brand of anthem producing thrash. Sporting a fuller sound than your average thrash band, RANCOR are an ultra aggressive shock to the system, catchy but lethal like the Ebola virus and thoroughly dominant at what they do! With a bass heavy sound created through textbook musicianship there is little to criticize and my only real jibe would be that vocally things can go a little flat in places, although not often.
A forceful attack of savage Spanish thrash then from RANCOR and their impressive sophomore release DARK FUTURE!
For some reason I tend to be very particular about thrash, more so than other metal genres. With the resurgence of the genre there have been plenty of bands that get the basics down and don’t go any further, but thankfully there are still enough acts out there trying to offer thrash that actually has some staying power. Spain’s Rancor is one of the more recent bands I have come across that does the style well and has the right balance of flashiness and memorable riffs. As is turns out, the group has actually been around since 1998 but didn’t start releasing demos until around 2002 or so. Their most recent effort Dark Future has some absolutely killer instrumental work and fans of the style should enjoy what these guys have to offer.
Rancor comes out strong right from the start, and the majority of their tracks have a great blend of fast paced thrash riffs and slower moments. They don’t go for speed the entire time like some of the other groups in the genre, instead scaling back the attack at key moments to offer some mid-tempo grooves and slower melodic breaks that provide some variation and help the instrumentals refocus. Dark Future certainly isn’t lacking in prominent bass lines or flashy guitar solos, but it feels like there is actual substance to go with it and there are some passages that were still in my head after I had finished listening. There haven’t been a whole lot of thrash releases in recent memory I was able to say that about, and this definitely makes a big difference. Rancor may not stray that far from the tried and true style, but the catchiness of the riffs and prominent grooves goes a long way and the case of substance over flashiness prevents them from becoming a mere retro thrash retread.
Lead singer Dani López delivers a fairly dynamic performance that incorporates everything from melodic cleaner pitches to gruff singing and a little screaming. The first time through Dark Future a few of these vocal styles didn’t quite click with me, and after giving the release several more spins I started to appreciate the performance more. I can definitely appreciate the sheer level of variation that is present throughout this album, as López seems to be jumping from one pitch to the other multiple times over the course of each song. But there were a few sections where the transition did seem to be just a bit too much and the vocals seemed just slightly off, which may be what I was picking out the first time through. It’s not a deal breaker by any means and doesn’t happen that often, and as a whole the energy of the performance won me over (though I’m still particular to the higher ranges, which may just be a personal preference).
Any issues with Dark Future are minor, and as a whole Rancor come off as a thrash band that knows their chosen style quite well. The vocals hit just about every range you can expect from the genre, and the instrumentals had a great mix of speed and slower grooves. I tend to avoid reviewing thrash too often as there are far too many mediocre groups out there, but Xtreem Music has once again proven they have an eye for talent. If you’re looking for an album that does the old school sound well without merely copycatting off the more popular acts, this should do the trick.
"Dark Future" es uno de esos trabajos que, a nivel visual, trata de arrastrarnos como tantos y tantos lanzamientos a dÃa de hoy a la parafernalia thrasher de los ochenta mediante una llamativa y colorida portada, la cual me ha recordado por momentos a la entrañable imagen de cabecera de la mÃtica serie de dibujos animados "Dragones Y Mazmorras", todo sea dicho.
"The Last Drop Of Blood" es la incendiaria y demoledora canción que abre el trabajo. Una canción acelerada y agresiva en la que nos topamos con un estribillo machacón pero melódico, donde Dani abre ese amplio abanico de posibilidades que atesora como vocalista. "Addicted To Hate" es, como el propio tÃtulo indica, puro odio concentrado y perpetrado a base de riffs de guitarra cortantes y ultrarrápidos.
Por su parte, "Knocking At The Gates Of Hell", a pesar de los coros taberneros que tiene, es una pieza algo más melódica, en la que hallamos alguna que otra interesante vuelta de tuerca que conduce a la canción hasta el universo de bandas como los anteriormente citados MEGADETH y ANNIHILATOR. A continuación, "Deaf People" vuelve a mostrar la faceta más melódica del Thrash mediante una trabajada lÃnea vocal, de corte actual, y unas lúcidas estrofas en las que hay contundencia combinada con armonÃa.
"Sea Of Lies" entra ametrallando y devuelve al grupo a una dinámica más veloz y ácida. El tema en cuestión tiene uno de los estribillos más pegadizos y convincentes del álbum. En "Dark Future" cobra presencia una imponente base rÃtmica al inicio para dar paso a otro ejercicio de caña desbocada en la que luce mucho uno de los mejores repertorios de solos de guitarra de todo el larga duración.
"There's No Love" echa el pestillo a un álbum que termina igual que comienza; sin contemplaciones, con abrasiva furia y dejándonos un mensaje bien claro: RANCOR es una banda madura, más musculada, por momentos perfeccionista, más rica en matices y recursos que nunca y con un fehaciente potencial que puede seguir creciendo dÃa a dÃa.
Y este "Dark Future" no es sino otro de los muchos ejemplos que desde hace varios años soporta dicha teorÃa. Segundo disco ya de los madrileños, tras un fenomenal "Release the Rancor", perfecta carta de presentación discográfica de una banda veterana ya en el circuito de conciertos habituales y que continúa con la lógica evolución del citado debut.
Entre los variados cortes del disco tenemos la apertura que es un puñetazo sónico en toda regla, sentando las bases de lo que encontraremos de ahà en adelante, con una frase que es toda una declaración de intenciones: "the time has come for us to return", dando paso a la rapidez sin tregua de "The Last Drop of Blood". Las reminiscencias a ANTHRAX, SLAYER o TESTAMENT pronto se nos vienen a la mente, pero vistas desde un prisma totalmente personal, sin esconderlas pero a la vez dotándolas de sello propio. "Addicted to Hate" es precisamente todo esto llevado un paso más allá, trabajando más el riff y bajando en ciertos pasajes la velocidad, sin escatimar en potencia ni tralla. ¿Se puede llevar el concepto aún más lejos? "Knocking at the Gates of Hell" demuestra que sÃ, jugando ahora con un tema más elaborado en composición, riff y estructura, donde Serra y Jorge hacen una labor rÃtmica estupenda.
Uno que lleva rulando desde hace años, tiene grabado una epoca del metal a fuego, en los años ochenta, con la eclosion de bandas como fueron Overkill, Anthrax, y ese sonido, aunque parezca mentira, no es muy facil de encontrar. Unos por el exceso de brutalidad, otros por el sonido distinto.
Rancor han conseguido precisamente eso, un disco que deberia haber nacido en la bay area, junto a Exodus, con ese sonido bay-area que impregna cada cancion, y que me hace quietarme un huevo de años de encima, y subirme a la mesa a hacer headbanging, como un descosido. Esto es debido al inmejorable elenco de canciones que atesora este disco y que se te clavan con sus dobles guitarras en cada poro de tu cuerpo.
Empezamos con un temazo como es "Last drop of blood" con un alto de voz de Dani que muy poca gente se atreveria a afrontar, y que el sigue con fluidez. La estructura es de un thrash tecnico, con un alto componente melodico (hablando siempre de los parametros del thrash), en la que los duetos de guitarra, llevados por la velocidad de la percusion, campean enseñoreados por el tema, cuyo estribillo puedes seguir con facilidad. La mezcla del tema es limpia y se puede apreciar cada registro, y distinguir cada miembro en su estilo, desde Serra, a Ricky, cada uno en su estilo caracteristico, con el bajo bien presente de Serra. La labor por otro lado de la bateria de Jorge es apabullante.
"Adicted to hate" explora la vertiente mas Anthrax, mas rapida, que bien podria acompañar cualquier tema de los primeros discos de los mismos, en un tema speedico que deja claro el espiritu rabioso de la musica de Rancor ejecutada desde la mejor de las tecnicas.
"Knocking at the gates of hell" tiene ese aura a Overkill, muy lograda por el sonido caracteristico del bajo de serra, en su comienzo, en un tema mas oscuro, y menos pegadizo que los anteriores, mas malevolo, que contrasta con sus temas mas rapidos, con un marcado tono cadente. Un tema old school sin duda, que contrasta con el resto, pero que queda muy bien.
Volvemos otra vez a una intro marcada de guitarra en la que el bajo de serra apabuyante, da paso a los tonos guiados de las guitarras de ricky y vasco, a volandas de la bateria de Jorge. "DEAF PEOPLE" sigue la senda thrash, pero tambien da paso a un estribillo de Dani, mas melodico, que combina muy bien con la base de del tema, que convina este sonido con las bases mas cañeras del tema, que en ocasiones incluso puedes paladear zonas que te recuerdan a unos megadeth melodicos, para pasar a su sonido caracreristico. Muy interesante tema, muy polifacetico en cuanto a su sonido.
"Sea of lies", concatena el tema con el anterior sin pausa, pasando a otro tema de puro thrash, con las guitarras hechando humo, en un tema de marcado caracter, parecido en contundencia a lo que vimos en su primer disco, per que tambien se han brindado a conjugar un estribillo mas melodico, que queda muy bien en el contexto hiper rapido del tema, con uno de los riffs mas pegadizos de los que hemos ido oyendo hasta ahora.Un futuro clasico del grupo, para mi gusto.
"Dark future" da nombre al disco y es sin duda de los mejores temas, uno de los mas conseguidos en cuanto a sonido, y que bebe de el sonido que caracteriza a esta banda, con matices cambiantes de sonido, guardando siempre los esquemas del tema, donde de a mi parecer brilla sobre todo la gran labor vocal de Dani, conjugando los multiples registros de voz. Tampoco podemos olvidar el sonido central del tema que te hace moverte quieras o no, creando una atmosfera perfectamente reflejada en la portada. Otro clasico en ciernes.
"Chaos of life" comienza con un ritmo adictivo de guitarras/base ritmica trepidante, con un sonido mas incisivo que en otros temas, en la que la voz de Dani hace el traspaso dicotomico de dos seres en el computo del tema, hiperveloz. El sonido se aleja un poco de lo que es el sonido Rancor, mas cortante, tambien mas oscuro.
"Nothing whihing" comienza como un tema melacolico, y melodico, muy en la senda de lo que fue el album "Ride the lightning" conjugando las lineas pesadas con un lineal melodico, mas matizado, y que es tan dificil de obtener, pero que en este tema lo han sacado con soltura, dando lugar a un tema, de multiples prismas para afrontarl. El lapso de guitarra doble acabando en la guitarra sin distorsion es increible, al final del tema.
"Theres no love" cierra el disco marcanado claro lo que es este disco, puro y jodido thrash metal, con las señas de identidad de este grupo en uno de sus proximos clasicos que hemos podido degustar en directo, y desde luego uno de los temas mas adictivos, que mas se te queda grabado al oirlo, pues auna la mejor tecnica, con la rapidez inusitada, con las parte melodicas perfectamente entrelazadas.
Es otro disco de reseña de la gran hornada thrash que estamos viviendo, y este disco esta llamado a competir por el trono thrash, sin duda, solo hay que verlos en directo para comprobarlo.
Gran produccion y mezcla del disco, que ha sacado un perfecto sonido, y una atmosfera digna de los grandes discos de thrash de la añorada epoca de la bay area.
Besides delivering some blistering records, the Bay Area Thrashers from TESTAMENT have left a legacy behind that a good deal of bands are trying to live up to. I was quite surprised when I stumbled across a Spanish band a good while ago, that delivered a good blast in form of the album "Release The Rancor", which is a good study in nostalgic Bay Area madness performed in a modern and intense manner, without putting the old legends to shame. We have now moved a couple of years up in time and the Spaniards are ready with their second full length attack "Dark Future", and the future is indeed dark. I haven't apparently matured since I first laid ears upon RANCOR's music, and RANCOR has, that's damned. They are still blasting Bay Area Thrash, though the expression is a bit more mature and nuanced. It's not all bad, it just takes a couple of spins to get into the madhouse this time around. Something I really like is the incorporation of 80s Crossover styled vocals and direct riffing, blending in and out of melodic twists and straight on thrashing. The lads have become quite good at the songwriting part and deliver some nice tunes that makes your head 'bang and brings back that old smirky smile, we all had once, while thrashing along to the classics. RANCOR delivers a nostalgic trip down memory lane in a good and intense manner, without it being dusty or ripping any off, there are some well put homages to different of the old gods, which I think would be proud of the connection to Thrashers as these. It's been a while since I have been put in a Thrash trance, like with the two records this band has put out so far, while speaking of newer releases that is. Nothing will ever beat the past, though some releases get close to competing!
Tras el interesante debut que se marcaron en 2010 con “Release the Rancorâ€, la banda madrileña ha sopesado todas las dudas sobre su futuro, marcándose un regreso digno de mención.
9 nuevos temas, fornidos bajo una apariencia demoniaca, la primera visión que tuve del diseño artÃstico del álbum, fue bastante buena, por otro lado la música de “Dark Future†no ha hecho sino confirmar la buena impresión al ver esa tapa con ese demonio incitando al caos y la destrucción.
La primera toma de contacto con el álbum, hace que uno se plantee ciertas premisas de que dirección van a tomar las canciones o el lugar que estás merecen para los que conocemos a fondo el Thrash metal o sus variantes, las cuales han ido emergiendo a lo largo de los años en bandas que más de uno conocerá, es imposible no nombrar a grupos como ONSLAUGHT, FORBBIDDEN, EXODUS, DARK ANGEL, MEGADETH, OVERKILL o SLAYER, estos últimos, perdieron recientemente a su miembro fundador, Jeff Hanneman. Por otro lado, RANCOR nunca han ocultado su admiración por tal músico y su banda, la cual influencia las composiciones del conjunto madrileño, más allá de comparaciones innecesarias que no llevan a ningún lado.
Con tan solo dos álbumes de estudio, RANCOR se consagra con “Dark Future†como una de las promesas del Thrash metal nacional. En este trabajo demuestran lo que son capaces de hacer con tan sólo unos buenos riffs y unas ideas muy trabajadas, y que por otro lado están muy bien llevadas. Obvio que no debes dejar escapar la oportunidad de degustar lo que se cuece aquÃ, Dani López a las voces, Ricky y Vasco a las guitarras, Serra al bajo y Jorge Sáez a la baterÃa, demuestran cómo se puede hacer un trabajo de la vieja escuela, sin tan siquiera subirse por las ramas.
3 años han pasado desde su debut, y si en su primera propuesta veÃa a una banda con grandes ideas, que si bien no iban mal encaminados, con este relevo, RANCOR explotan la habilidad y el camino tan arduo que han tenido que recorrer tras años escondidos en la sombra.
Thrash Metal, sin pelos ni señales, temas como “There’s No Love†con una intro simulando un medio orgasmo, una canción que entra como un rayo en tu sesera y que va directa a la yugular, inicio explosivo con cantidad de solos adornando la melodÃa, y la fantástica labor de Dani junto al apoyo de sus acompañantes a los coros, imposible no acordarse de MEGADETH, en las guitarras intermedias, o esos cambios desdeñables a merced de los precisos riffs que intercalan distintos cambios de ritmo, un trallazo que se desmarca como lo mejorcito del álbum, vocalmente podrÃa mejorar, ya que denoto cierta linealidad en las voces, en la parte compositiva, nada que objetar.
Mayormente los temas rondan los 5 minutos de duración, casi todos, “The Last Drop of Blood†tiene unas guitarras muy logradas, con una concesión rÃtmica donde cabe alabar la profundidad de la baterÃa, el sollozo atronador de las guitarras, muy marcadas por un remolino de riffs y serpenteos, que pujan una dureza y una velocidad rÃtmica aplastante.
La ralladura de “Deaf People†me ha gustado por la forma en la que está tocada la guitarra como rallando las vestiduras y el bajo de Serra, enmarcando una lección arrolladora más melodiosa, con unos punteos de bajo aterciopelados; el desgarro producido por el timbre de Dani y sus matizadas maniobras de lucimiento, aplacará a las fieras, dejando presente su gran labor, a excepción de sus acompañantes, que no lo hacen nada mal.
La metamórfica entrada de “Dark Future†barre contigo y te acuchilla con un bajo devastador, el estribillo además de ser bastante pegadizo, resulta hasta agradable, a pesar de que el tema es una cuchilla cortante que no dejará tÃtere con cabeza. Musicalmente, sigue la lÃnea de los temas anteriores, velocidad y tralla, pero no es hasta el minuto 4.41 cuando la banda sorprende con unas guitarras de fondo aterrador, recordándome a MERCYFUL FATE, otro bombazo sonoro capaz de resucitar a los muertos y sacarlos de su tumba.
Menuda dentellada en toda la cara, puro thrash sin concesiones, un trabajo tremendamente recomendable, caña burra bien amueblada con una base letal, RANCOR apuestan alto con esta segunda puesta de largo.
While I’m sure Spain has a great thrash scene, I’ve only ever really come across two bands from the country: Angelus Apatrida, and Rancor. Based on my prior experience with Angelus Apatrida, expectations were pretty high for Rancor (especially when you consider the awesome name and killer album art!). Luckily, these guys do not disappoint at all. While the music is perhaps the most straightforward thrash in existence, Rancor has a few ways of keeping things interesting throughout the record.
The best place to start would be the vocals of Dani López. He has a unique tone to his singing. While he does use shouts often, he is definitely also has the melodic abilities needed to switch things up. One immediate comparison that came to mind is to Hyades; not because of the sound of his vocals, but just because of how much character they have. The rest of the band unfortunately doesn’t stand out as much, but they do their best to avoid making the songwriting too samey. For one thing, there is certainly a lot of thrashing, but there are also slower, heavier moments as well. The beginning of “The Last Drop of Blood†sets the stage with these brooding riffs before the high-speed thrashing kicks in for the verse. At times, things can get quite melodic (think Iron Maiden), such as in "Deaf People". In addition, the riffs can get more technical than a simple 4/4 thrash riff (see the opening of “Addicted To Hate†for one example). Much like many new thrash bands, there are the occasional blast beats, but they are used to mix things up, rather than for simply upping the speed of the drumming. The lead guitars and bass are both unspectacular, but they get the job done. “Dark Future†is simply one of those albums that you don’t need to think too much about the performances, and can enjoy the thrashing nature of the music.
Rancor’s “Dark Future†is a slab of modern thrash that is definitely worth hearing. While it definitely sounds like a band that just wants to pay homage to their idols, they do so with more conviction than some of their contemporaries. Don’t miss out on this if you are a huge thrash fan!
