Comentario:
STORMVOLD recorded album this year, that is full of nihilism, occult blasphemy and black death metal. The crosses are turning around here, beasts are screaming and guitar walls are falling down from all sides. It reminds me a trip to a lonely ossuary. The CD has a dirty, ugly sound, which adds to the believability of the music. STORMVOLD entombs you alive, their music gnaws you to the bones.Let them take you away on the next world voluntarily and with pleasure. Black death metal album, that was recorded at the cemetery!
STORMVOLD from Tenerife, Canary Islands is a two-men project born in 2012 and after two demos and a compilation tape, Xtreem Music picked all their material up and released their first two demos with some new stuff as their first real full-length in form of "Third Bestial Mutilation". The presented eight tracks are a dirty mix of old school Death Metal influenced by US bands like early MORBID ANGEL, with some influences of raw Black Metal and Thrash Metal of the late 80s. STORMVOLD have no ambitions in providing any melodies or fine solos, they reduce their sound to the style, which was around in the middle and late 80s, when bands like early SEPULTURA, SARCOFAGO, POSSESSED and SLAYER made their first musical steps and the race was to become the most extreme band on the planet. The vocals are a harsh bastard of Death and Black Metal vocals. The raw guitars are low-tuned with maximum distortion adding some rare and raw guitar solos. The drumming is brutal and they keep the technical level low and the songs simple. The production also is raw and harsh, trying to match the standart of the 80s, but of course it sounds a lot better than really old productions. I prefer the two songs of their first demo, as 'Extermination From Nature' and 'Levitation Of Bestiality' are really good tracks, with some nice lead guitar lines, but they reduced the incorporated melodies after this release. Those of you, who still prefer the times, when Death, Black and Thrash Metal was one dirty mixture and nobody cared for categories, you should give these guys a listen.
Seeing the name Stormvold I immediately had to think of the Norwegian death metal band Molested that was active in the 90s and released an EP entitled 'Stormvold'. Looking a bit more into this band they hail from the Canary island of Tenerife and Molested seems to be one of their main influences. The artwork on the cover of 'Third Bestial Mutilation' was even done by Erlend Erichsen, who used to play drums for the Norse act.
Basically 'Third Bestial Mutilation' is a compilation of the three demos by the Spanish duo. Even when the first four songs haven't officially been released before. The other four tracks have been released on demos in 2012 and 2013 though. Musically this is quite brutal death metal where you can hear a clear influence of South-American acts besides Molested. The tempo in general is fast and the music seems quite chaotic. The trained ear will hear that it is all well played and this simply is a band with a specific style. Just check 'm out I'd say. I pretty much dig what Stormvold presents.
Honestly, I'm really surprised at some of the music that comes my way.
I do have personal policies when it comes to what I'll review and what I'll check out even. There are things that I've looked at them and thought...no...no way in hell..haha
When I saw the title Third Beastial Mutilation, I have to be honest, it seemed fairly certain to me that this music would be too offensive to be published here.
I didn't give it much of a perusal and didn't read the presser that accompanied it too closely. When music has a title like this, it's typically not that good.
In metal, offensive titles are the same thing as selling sex instead of music. Well, I listened to this album and I realized that it's far more than just a title, and the artwork doesn't jive with what I normally take as intentionally offensive music, so I listened to it.
Stormvold has crafted a masterpiece of old school death metal with Third Bestial Mutilation.
Each part of the music brings something to the table that makes the music slightly different than say Deicide, Obituary, or Carcass, but there's enough in common with all three of them to make this record fit in with that crowd.
But hailing from Madrid, Spain would've been enough to keep them out of that group I think....
This album exceeds expectations by defying death metal conventions. Instead of thundering snares and double bass blastbeats 95% of the time, there are mountains and valleys in the drums.
No triggers are used on this record. The double bass blasts are all done with proper drums. In the heaviest moments, they are felt more than heard. Though they thunder like carpet bombing, they feel like an avalanche crashing down.
The rhythm guitars have that holy grail tone... A heavily overdriven fuzz sound that Slayer used to such perfection, but with a strong mid-range and bottom end rumble.
If this sound could be distilled into a distortion pedal, every up and coming death metal guitarist would have 3.
The leads are a bit avant garde. Instead of wailing sweep picks or blistering arpeggios, the leads start off with harmonic swells and move into Buckethead styled solos. They move so quickly from A to B, it sometimes feels like a synthesizer.
The vocals, though guttural and harsh, do not overpower the sound. They are mixed down into the background and fell into line with the drums.
Strong and atmospheric.
Finally, this album begins slowly and moves into the brutality and speed on the back side of the eight tracks. It feels like the space between two armies as they prepare for battle in medieval Europe with swords drawn.
In the beginning, the space is large and languid and at the end, there is no room but that of the swords strokes.
All metaphor aside, this is the best death metal record of 2014.
Praktycznie cały album to pieprzone death metalowe tornado. Raz szybciej, raz wolniej, innym razem z kolei pojawia się całkiem chwytliwa zagrywka, a wszystko to skąpane w typowo podziemnym sosie. Czuć tu zło i o to właśnie chodzi.
A saber, “Third Bestial Mutilation”, “Second Guanche Massacre” y “First Tibicena Brutality”.
