1er álbum de esta banda de exageradamente oscuro, denso y podrido Doom/ Death con Dave Rotten de AVULSED a la voz. Si lo tuyo son grupos grupos como DISEMBOWELMENT, EVOKEN, RIPPIKOULU, MYTHIC, WINTER, DESECRESY...
I was expecting to just review a demo before going to sleep - not get oppressed with incredibly despairing and gloriously desperate doom. With super low pitched growls coming out of some sort of stygian crypt Famishgod are the kind of truly insane doom metal slaughter that attracted me so much to the genre in the first place. The incredible trudge of their new record Devourers of Light is frankly overwhelming. It leaves the listener beaten into the ground unable to reconcile themselves with the demented world that they have fallen into. There is a sense of utter brutality here that goes beyond any blast beat or riff. There is something physical about Famishgod - as if you feel your bones being pulled out of their sockets one by one. Even when the band speeds up there is a sense of crushing finality as if these are our last days here (get it?) and we have to press on no matter what the consequence. Famishgod have no hope and no sense of what tomorrow can hold, instead they focus on the suffocating terror of the everyday.
"Devourers of Light" is the answer to the solitude of empty graves. Doom death metal reminds echo sounding of endless underground's corridors. Everything is long, urgent and sad, like an infinite line of mourners. Zombie are dancing last dance. Death is again very near! Album, covered with mildew and cobwebs!"
Dalla sempre attiva etichetta spagnola Xtreem Music arriva il disco d’esordio dei connazionali Famishgod.
A differenza di molte delle ultime uscite provenienti dalla penisola iberica in ambito doom negli ultimi tempi, la band propende decisamente verso il funeral o quanto meno verso un death doom dai tratti scarni e morbosi, sulla scia di nomi quali Encoffinaton e Disembowlement o, restando su un piano leggermente piĂą ascoltabile, Evoken.
Appare ovvio, quindi, quanto tutto ciò renda il disco tutt’altro che di impatto immediato, ma allo stesso tempo pericolosamente avvolgente, pur nelle sue atmosfere cupe ed asfissianti.
I Famishgod sono in realtà il progetto di Pako Deimler, che si occupa di tutti gli strumenti ad eccezione della batteria, che è affidata ad una macchina, mentre alla voce troviamo il ben noto Dave Rotten dei grandi Avulsed.
Una produzione scarna, il rantolo inumano di Dave, un’assenza quasi totale di qualsiasi spiraglio di luce, fatte salve le sporadiche concessioni acustiche da parte di Pako, sono i fattori che rendono Devourers of Light un lavoro per iniziati, ovvero per appassionati che hanno dimestichezza con sonorità di questo tipo.
Costoro potranno trarre sicuramente la giusta dose di piacere dalle trame ossessive proposte dal mefitico duo nel corso di un’ora di musica di rara pesantezza, ma indubbiamente dotata di una profondità che rende l’ascolto un’esperienza particolare.
Minimale e ottundente, il sound dei Famishgod possiede un effetto realmente soffocante e ancor piĂą risaltano, pertanto, quei rari momenti in cui la chitarra traccia qualche linea melodica che, mai come in questo caso, equivale a nulla piĂą di una cura palliativa per un moribondo.
Come detto, consiglierei di lasciar perdere a priori a chi, al solo sentir pronunciare la parola doom, si mette sulla difensiva, mentre a quelli che si beano di questa velenosa dipendenza, Devourers of Light potrebbe riservare non poche soddisfazioni.
Do you enjoy the cult classic Doom Death album "Into Darkness" by WINTER? Spain's FAMISHGOD definitely does. This duo, consisting of Dave Rotten on vocals and a dude named Pako Deimler on everything else, play heavy and unadorned Doom Death of the purest sort. Think slow COFFINS, slow ASPHYX, "Forest Of Equilibrium" era CATHEDRAL; punctuated with Dave Rotten's savage guttural voice - you get the general picture. The album can sound a bit samey through its almost one hour playing time, but "Devourers Of Light" is a fitting hynotic soundtrack for those sleep-deprived souls having a particularly misanthropic day.
Ein Zwitter aus Doom- und Death Metal liegt nun mittels Famishgod vor, wobei wir es mit einem überaus düsteren Vertreter zu tun haben, was speziell Freunde der kultigen Disembowelment erfreuen sollte. Nicht minder intensiv herrschen nämlich tief gestimmte Gitarren das Geschehen und ergießen sich in teils zäher Umsetzung, wobei sich kein geringerer als Dave Rotten (Avulsed, Christ Denied) für die tiefe Artikulierung verantwortlich zeigt. Jene scheint einer Gruft entstiegen, wie auch die morbide Produktion, welche “Devourers Of Light” einen fetten Charakter beschert und das mitunter stampfende Schlagwerk hervorhebt. Natürlich wohnt dieser Vorstellung ein beständig schwerer Aspekt bei, und wenn zwischenzeitlich das Tempo mal leicht angezogen wird, dann kommt das zum Tragen, was Famishgod am ehesten auszeichnet- wuchtige Arrangements, die dennoch Raum für melodische Gitarrenspiele lassen. Freundlich ist dieser Batzen deshalb aber noch lange nicht ausgefallen, es regiert ausschließlich Düsternis, welche lediglich von aufkeimenden Riffwänden kurzzeitig bereichert wird, ehe sich der Mantel dunkler Prophezeiungen abermals um den Hörer legt.
Mit “Devourers Of Light” legen die beiden Musiker von Famishgod ein starkes Debüt vor, welches innerhalb einer guten Stunde so ziemlich alles platt walzt, was da im Wege steht- sogar das Gemüt des Hörers wird hier mächtig angekratzt! Kein Wunder, knallt doch die fette Produktion wirklich beachtlich. Was ich mir für die Zukunft jedoch wünschen würde, wäre, dass der tiefe Gesang etwas stärker in den Vordergrund tritt, um mehr Aufmerksamkeit für sich einnehmen zu können. Freunde des (Funeral) Doom/Death schlagen zu!
Just being addicted to ENCOFFINATION I received "DEVOURERS OF LIGHT" from FAMISHGOD, a new band of Dave 'Avulsed' Rotten. What was on his mind when he and his fellow band mate Pake Deimler, started this band/project? Being the most dark and heavy funeral doom band ever? I suppose so! Seven tracks counting almost an hour consisting bone-crushing doom! The first thing I thought listening to this unpolished death wish was to hang myself in a sort of dungeon, facing reality of this rotten world! This CD creates the perfect atmosphere for that. So if there are doubters among us, get this CD!
What about the music? In a second I could hear the incredible low and sick 'CHRIST DENIED' vocals of Dave accompanied by programmed drums and layers of sick guitars. A gory mess of misery is what you'll hear! Somehow the sound reminds me of the "A MATTER OF SPLATTER" demo from the old Dutch doom band, DISEMBOWEL. Does anyone still know that band!? The dark riffs are like hellish death that come to life through sick guitar lines. In terms of technical feats don't expect freaky or virtuosic guitar work. The tempo overall is sickening slow. Perfect to get in trance and to over think your sins and to find that rope or razor! On his own record label, XTREEM MUSIC, Dave is now spreading sickness for everyone who can appreciate what's written above. Good luck with this ordeal!
Spanish duo Famishgod consist of Funëdeim (Pako Deimler) and Dave Rotten, who we ofcourse know from acts such as Avulsed and Rottrevore. Don't expect Famishgod to be in the same filthy and fast death metal though, debut album 'Devourers Of Light' offers the listener an hour of heavy funeral doom, with a doom/death side step every now and then. It is a conceptual album that tells the story of the last, gruesome, claustrophobic and darkening hours of a dying monarch, seven chapters of the hours before he will be dragged of by light devouring creatures. Besides the lyrics (that you will not be able to hear and understand much of without a booklet), this concept is the basis for the accompanying artwork by Tommi Gromqvist.
The recipe consists of slow, ultra heavy and crushing riffs, with on th whole a rather staccato and not too varied (programmed) drumming pattern underneath, a few brittle and floating leads and some piano on top. There are a few pace changes where the slow and suffocating pace picks up that you might consider death/doom, but mostly, it is atmospheric, sinister, heavy and brooding. Battering. Not as in midtempo onbeat death metal, but as in truly slow, days-on-end battering of a siege weapon, incessant and patient, battering down your walls. The deep, lingering and low growling vocals by Dave Rotten fit the dark music like a glove. His vocal lines are quite a change of pace compared to his normal stuff. The programmed drums are a small drawback though, especially the cymbals are a little off-putting at times. On the whole though, 'Devourers Of Light' is pummeling on merciless enough to be able to ignore that.
This debut is a heavy, atmospheric, dark album that beats you senseless. If you dig Evoken and Winter, check this out. A new album has already been announced for 2016.
"Devourers of Light" nos lleva en un viaje de una hora de duración por punteos limpios, melancólicos, y riffs oscuros que se prolongan en el tiempo en bucles casi infinitos. Una experiencia para amantes del doom metal y la versión más pausada del buen death. Confiemos en que el tiempo permita al dúo prolongar su actividad como banda, algo siempre complejo tratándose del bueno de Dave. Por el momento, su debut en los escenarios será el sábado 28 de Febrero en la Paddock de Madrid, acompañanado nada menos que a bandas como SATURNUS, LANTLOS, AUTUMNAL, OPHIS o SHORES OF NULL en un evento denominado THE END OF THE THIRD DAY FEST. Dará que hablar.
Un ligero y misterioso piano nos abre paso a este primer disco de FAMISHGOD, proyecto musical de Pako Deimler (MORKULV, SVIPDAGR) y Dave Rotten (AVULSED, CHRIST DENIED, HOLYCIDE…etc).
La voz de Dave Rotten en FAMISHGOD es como la música, pesada y oscura. Arrastra las letras con extrema guturalidad al compás de las notas, poco a poco, como un alma sin rumbo arrastrando sus oxidadas cadenas.
Y el disco no es precisamente breve. Olvidaos de tecladetes bonitos (las partes de piano son bien nihilistas), voces femeninas o interludios de descanso. Toda la negatividad del universo ha intentado plasmarse en este trabajo digno de compararse con los mĂticos THERGOTHON, o incluso CORRUPTED. NingĂşn tema baja de los siete minutos.
En el 2013 se fundĂł la banda, al parecer serĂa un grupo de estudio solamente, para crear una mĂşsica extrema, una mezcla de doom y death metal. El resultado ha sido el oscuro Devourers Of Light, una hora y siete canciones depresivas por momentos, con una voz ultra cavernosa que más que cantar se lamenta.
Las canciones del disco lo llevan todo al extremo. El doom a los extremos mas incalculables que pudiera existir, la sensación de muerte, fetidez y podredumbre, el sentido dramático… en fin, todo.
Famishgod nace a principios de 2013 de las inquietas mentes de FunĂ«deim (guitarra, bajo) y Dave Rotten (voz) como un proyecto de death/doom esencialmente de estudio. Su presente LP debut es el resultado final de muchos meses de composiciĂłn, de trabajo en silencio y de elaboraciĂłn y reelaboraciĂłn desde la idea inicial de grabar una demo de cuatro temas. Para dar forma al presente disco, el dĂşo inicial de mĂşsicos se completĂł con Oli (bajo), Erik Raya (baterĂa) y Miguel Bárez (guitarra), dando lugar asĂ a la formaciĂłn encargada de plasmar un LP en directo en los prĂłximos meses. Mientras tanto, los amantes de la mĂşsica extrema tenemos tiempo suficiente para dedicar la atenciĂłn de rigor al presente “Devourers of Light”, un álbum trabajado y cuidado de principio a fin; una buena muestra de que las cosas bien hechas requieren su tiempo y de que la dedicaciĂłn y el detallismo siempre dan sus frutos.
Dividido en siete canciones o capĂtulos, el presente LP se perfila como un álbum conceptual en el que vale la pena sumergirse con las luces apagadas y un buen equipo de sonido. Las vampĂricas introducciones de piano, las guturales de ultratumba y unas guitarras gravĂsimas van tejiendo un muro sonoro muy compacto y espeso, un flujo lento pero imparable de riffs y melodĂas pesadas con una producciĂłn muy apropiada. La hora de mĂşsica que nos ofrece “Devourers of Light” no es de fácil acceso ni digestiĂłn, pero consigue entroncar con la potencia del death metal americano y la pesadez mántrica del doom más ralentizado de una forma propia y coherente. El resultado, como no podĂa ser de otra manera, es tremendamente oscuro e inquietante: las siete canciones del LP se desenvuelven como un Ăşnico continuo en una sesiĂłn de mĂşsica muy lapidaria. Desde la poderosa base rĂtmica de “Devourer Of Light” hasta las espeluznantes notas acĂşsticas de “Brightless”, la atmĂłsfera oscura del LP impregna al oyente en seguida y de forma muy hipnĂłtica.
La banda sonora que envuelve esta trama, como no podĂa ser de otro modo, es la oscuridad más solemne hecha mĂşsica: Puro Doom Death Metal en su vertiente más fĂşnebre, crĂptica y agĂłnica, donde el tiempo se detiene para regocijarse en el sufrimiento de aquel cuya luz se apaga. El sonido de FAMISHGOD se cimenta en una base de baterĂas programadas sobre la que se eleva una muralla de bajos sobrios y guitarras densas y arrastradas, con distorsiĂłn putrefacta y afinaciĂłn en los avernos. La voz de Dave Rotten se aleja diametralmente del estilo de sus anteriores bandas, centrando su interpretaciĂłn en registros guturales subgraves, vomitando lentamente silabas largas y gorgoteantes, que dan la sensaciĂłn de un condenado arrastrando sus grilletes.
La producciĂłn de “Devourers of Light” ha sido asumida Ăntegramente por el dĂşo, ocupándose FunedĂ«im de la grabaciĂłn de todos los instrumentos y la programaciĂłn de baterĂas, y Dave Rotten de las voces, asĂ como de la mezcla y masterizaciĂłn en sus Sanctuary Studios, donde han logrado un acabado cuidado y, me consta, que muy cercano a lo esperado por la banda cuando definieron su leitmotiv: densidad, oscuridad y atmĂłsferas claustrofĂłbicas y depresivas. Creo que el resultado está más conseguido, quizá con el, para mĂ, Ăşnico “pero” de la producciĂłn de la baterĂa, que suena más digital de lo que pide el grupo. Estas canciones con un sonido más profundo y analĂłgico habrĂan sido para cagarse literalmente. El “do it yourself” que rodea a la ediciĂłn, culmina con su puesta en circulaciĂłn vĂa Xtreem Music, sello de Dave Rotten.
En mi opinión, un estupendo debut el de FAMISHGOD, que han logrado parir un trabajo sólido y con perspectivas de hacerse un hueco en el panorama doommetalero que, si bien es minoritario en comparación con otras ramas del Metal, podemos presumir de atesorar entre nuestras fronteras a varias sus más grandes bandas a nivel internacional. Espero que FAMISHGOD hayan venido para quedarse y “Devourers of Light” no sea más que la punta del iceberg.
