Turno para “Instrospective Nightmareâ€, un tema que se podrÃa catalogar como medio tiempo aunque tiene sus momentos de rapidez, en el que el old school está muy presente, incluyendo alguna parte de guitarra limpia, la cual le va como anillo al dedo al corte. En la pista que da tÃtulo al cd nos encontramos otro temazo repletos de riffs cortantes y en el que sin duda lo más destacable es la inmensa labor de Oscar al Bajo.
En “Masterade†observamos un tema más simple que el conjunto del trabajo discográfico, pero desprende mucho feeling, un corte simple pero directo a la vez, en vivo tiene que ser una autentica gozada escucharlo. Algo parecido ocurre en “Ursula has a Tankâ€, aunque en esta ocasión los dibujos de los riffs son mucho más complejos y de más difÃcil ejecución, pero igual de frontal que el anterior.
Os pongo un poco en situación: pese a que la banda se formó a finales de los 90 (1999 concretamente) no fue hasta 2007 cuando pudimos escuchar su primera maqueta, titulada homónimamente. A partir de ahÃ, su carrera ha sido bastante brillante, y es que este nuevo álbum es el segundo de su carrera y ambos álbumes, editados por Xtreem Music (uno de los sellos más relevantes de España), han recibido grandes crÃticas por todos los medios especializados. Además, el álbum ha sido producido en Psychosomatic Recording Studio, donde ya han grabado otras grandes bandas como Helevorn o Trallery.
La producción está enormemente cuidada, con numerosos arreglos, una ecualización muy buena y donde todo suena como tiene que sonar. El paso de "Trashumancy" a este nuevo "Return to Pangea" es evidente, y es que es bastante más maduro, más cuidado y minucioso. Se nota mucho un gran trabajo detrás de este disco.
Estamos ante un power trÃo de thrash que junto a ÃNGELUS APATRIDA y CRISIX, me atreverÃa a decir que conforman las tres mejores bandas nacionales en este estilo. Esto es algo bastante personal y por supuesto, sin desmerecer por supuesto otras grandes bandas como RANCOR, EXODIA o TRALLERY. La escena thrash española está en un nivel de forma increible, y bandas como las antes mencionadas lo están demostrando dÃa a dÃa.
Su thrash metal es bastante estiloso y propio, y es que se alejan de temáticas excesivamente oscuras, aproximándose más a un thrash más maduro y menos blasfemo o agresivo, del estilo de Testament o los Megadeth más rápidos y filados. Mención aparte para el artwork, que me parece bastante innovador y original. Colorido, pero agresivo y propio de una banda de thrash. Lo interpreto como el planeta tierra regresando a tiempos muy antiguos, al principio de toda vida. Donde los primeros seres vivos, los más primitivos y antiguos poco a poco fueron construyendo lo que hoy dÃa conocemos como "civilización", todo ello antes de que los continuos cambios climáticos moldearan el planeta en el que hoy vivimos. Una especia de crÃtica de autodestrucción humana, pero a la vez una reivindicación de la esencia y lo más puro de todos nosotros. Retorno a la pangea paleozoica.
Aunque su discografÃa es corta para una trayectoria iniciada en 1999, Breathless han conseguido transmitir en Return To Pangea una efectiva sensación de madurez. Aprovechando sus fundamentos vinculados al thrash metal entregan una serie de composiciones de estructura versátil, desmarcándose de la dinámica de los ritmos recurrentes de escasa variación a la que se han apuntado en los últimos tiempos un buen número de bandas que apuestan por recuperar las raÃces del thrash primigenio.
Apoyándose en influencias de formaciones tan determinantes como Testament o Megadeth, Breathless construyen su propio camino sin vincularse de forma excesiva con los grupos mencionados. La propuesta de los mallorquines mira más al presente que al pasado, es decir, sus composiciones tienen esencias del thrash “ochentero†pero su arquitectura contiene trazos del metal actual, lo que les permite contar con un enfoque personal que los aleja de corrientes pasadas.
Temas como “Killing-sophyâ€, “Atomic Waste†o “Introspective Nightmareâ€, muestran la agudeza compositiva de Breathless, fusionando la desbordante energÃa del thrash con efectivos elementos melódicos de guitarra.
There has never been a better time for the Spanish Metal scene than right now. I barely remember any band besides BARON ROJO and OBUS who could have been part of any Metal head conversation 20+ years ago. Now, Spain has graced us with some of the excellent bands of almost any genre and in parts thanks to the dedicated hard work of Mr. Dave Rotten from Xtreem Music who has been probably the most responsible for this achievement. As part of this new era comes Thrash Metal youngsters BREATHLESS with their second album ready for the kill. As like their previous album they effectively create the classic atmosphere done before by bands like FLOTSAM AND JETSAM, AGONY and even VIKING among others. Production wise, “Return To Pangea†is a significant improvement over their last album, especially on the guitar department which I simply enjoy very much. Songs like 'Atomic Waste' and 'Masterade' probably display albums best riffs where they could go one on one with other young but most popular Thrash Metal bands like HAVOK, WARBRINGER for example. BREATHLESS definitely can use the “you don’t fix what is not broken†motto, since they are not creating something new but definitely showing more and more that they are ready for the big leagues of the genre.
I thought the first album by Breathless, ’Thrashumancy’, was quite okay although it didn’t blow me away. This band from Mallorca has now returned and the first thing I noticed is they have lost one member. Bass player Javi Martà has left and guitarist Nazareno took care of all the bass parts on ‘Return To Pangea’. Musically the band has made a few leaps forwards. Breathless knows how to write a proper thrash metal songs and it is clear they have listened a lot to the great acts of the genre. Breathless has made a transition to current times though, which can be heard in the production of the genre. I wouldn’t count Breathless to the extreme thrash bands. Melody has an important role and as a whole ‘Return To Pangea’ sounds well-cared-for. When I hear the album I regularly am reminded of bands like Kreator, Atrophy, Sabbat and Exodus. Fans of current bands such as Angelus Apatrida or Suicidal Angels should give Breathless a listen as well.
We let this face to beaten at the same time let this body was attacked from behind when feel something which stabbing from the pride of thrash metal elements that they play in this second album. We indeed to experience sporadic bouts of them in implementing integrity of thrash metal that solid and dynamic – on the one hand, burn the skin due to tempted conduct an act to wounded ourselves. Satisfaction and enjoyment which derive from the album ' Return To Pangea ' started when they mercilessly assign an aggression of Thrash metal – not to mention when heard melodies from the traditional heavy metal and speed metal juxtaposed into composition of pure thrash metal that clean and harmonious.
Clean for transition of tempo, dynamic rhythms and intensively when applying a combination of melody and tempo. A touch of aggressive thrash and memorable– indeed easily in every song, especially when hearing a solid composition of them. The opening songs entitled ' Killing-sophy ', ' Atomic Waste ' and ' Introspective Nightmare ' have a balanced proportion between thrash, speed and traditional heavy metal and could clearly feel the essential elements that build up their music. The music that they create also inseparable from the rhythms of melodies unified and impresses in every rhythm that played – heard in vulgar when hear the following songs entitled ' Return To Pangea ', ' Beyond The Ritual ' and ' Masterade '.
All songs from this album appear satisfying and unknowingly already repeat it repeatedly. We Indeed expect to hear the music that has a depth of emotional flow indeed we expect and ' Breathless ' answer it through songs entitled ' Ursula Has a Tank ', ' Breathless ', ' Brooding Wraith ' and ' Spinning Metal '.
We are excited and satisfied could hear the full emotional package from ' Return To Pangea '. Quiet become aggressive and suddenly attack is an impression from us in feel their musical's nuance. We obtain the peak of enjoyment when heard songs at the last songs of album. For us, ' Return To Pangea ' is a pleasure to feel the emotions that complete.
It wasn't until a little over a year ago that I started realizing just how big the worldwide thrash scene actually was. Of course everybody knows the big ones. EXODUS, SLAYER, TESTAMENT etc. But then I learned about SUICIDAL ANGELS, DUST BOLT, HAVOK and so on. Talking about broadening ones horizon. Now every week one or two thrash albums arrive at ITC headquarters and it still amazes me how high the quality of most of those albums is and how many different interpretations of thrashmetal there actually are. Take BREATHLESS from Spain for instance. Though the band has been active since 1999, RETURN TO PANGEA is the band's 2nd album and the album grabbed me from beginning to end. BREATHLESS is clearly influenced by earlier thrashmetal and especially KREATOR comes to mind. A lot of new thrash bands out there about relentless brutality (and don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that!) but BREATHLESS leaves room for melody as well. The band balances brutal thrash with clever riffing and the occasional melodic lines and thus leaving an interesting sort of old school thrashmetal that doesn't disappoint. Not at all! The thing that grabbed me most was the fact that even though the music is old school it doesn't sound out dated at all and I feel that's a very important aspect of BREATHLESS' music.
Spain has always been more about death metal and the more barbaric side of black metal for me, with Dave Rotten and the excellent roster that he has under his Xtreem Music label. The label this year releases Spain thrashers Breathless‘ sophomore full length album, Return to Pangea. And as the title of the album suggests, Return to Pangea sees Breathless going back to the roots of thrash metal, where it all began.
Killing-sophy kicks off Return to Pangea proper, and right from the first riffs of Eduardo, one is brought back to the early Bar Area days, and influences from pioneers such as Metallica and Testament are immediately obvious. Throw in the speed and intensity that drummer Joan Font puts into the mix of Breathless (leaving on breathless indeed), one will manage to spot some elements of Exodus as well. The aggression in the vocal delivery of Eduardo, along with that abrasive edge that the band tends to indulge themselves in also bring in some Teutonic elements, and one can’t help but be reminded of the works of Kreator or Destruction.
The aural assault is broken by the melodic leads that punctuate the din of the rhythm section of Breathless, helping to make Return to Pangea a nice, balanced record and preventing things from being overly chaotic or monotonous. For instance, Beyond the Ritual is one of the more melodic tracks on Return to Pangea, and the old school heavy metal vibe that these Spaniards have put into the track can get rather reminiscent of Metalucifer and the likes.
Breathless‘ sophomore full length album is one hell of a fun record, and as the title suggests, the band goes back to discovering their roots in thrash metal – and effectively so. The whole range of influences that have gone into the melting pot that is Return to Pangea ensures that fans of thrash will instantly fall in love with this record.
