Doble álbum de 25 aniversario en 2-CD Digipack que incluye 18 temas re-grabados de todos los álbumes, EP's y demos con el sonido más pesado que ha tenido nunca la banda e incluyendo 16 vocalistas invitados de bandas como AT THE GATES, ABORTED, DEMILICH, AUTOPSY, GOD MACABRE, PENTAGRAM CHILE, MASSACRE, PAGANIZER, SINISTER, INCANTATION, PURTENANCE, MORTICIAN, SUPURATION, INTERMENT, NECROPHILIAC y DETERIOROT. Soberbio 2-CD digipack de lujo con funda de cartón y libreto de 44 pag. con literalmente toneladas de material!! El Disco nº2 incluye los mismos temas pero en sus grabaciones originales.
Das spanische Flaggschiff Avulsed feuert wieder einmal eine kernige Breitseite ab, und zwar in Form einer fetten Zusammenstellung, anlässlich des 25 jährigem Jubiläum. Eine verdammt feine Sache ist "Deathgeneration" in vielerlei Hinsicht. Verteilt auf zwei Silberlingen, so gibt es für jeden Freak brutalen Death Metals ordentlich was vor die Kauleiste, zumal hier Material vorgelegt wird, welches sich von allen Demo, EP, und CD Veröffentlichungen bedient. Doch damit nicht genug, denn jetzt kommt das eigentlich noch Interessantere: satte 16 Fronttiere sind hier mit beteiligt, die sich da an der Artikulation beteiligten, was natürlich recht ansprechende Aspekte aufwirft. So sind unter anderem die Herrschaften von Konsorten wie Mortician, Autopsy, Incantation, Paganizer, oder auch Demilich, am Werkeln, alles keine Unbekannten, die da mitmischen. Gekleidet in gewohnt fetter Produktion, so sind Brecher wie etwa "Stabwound Orgasm", "Burnt But Not Carbonized", oder "Dead Flesh Awakened" nur eine Frage der Zeit und qualitativ sind Avulsed meines Erachtens nach schon immer eine verdammt gute Truppe. Was die Gastbeiträge betrifft, so sticht Paul Zavaleta von Deteriorot mit seiner räudigen Artikulierung am Markantesten hervor und ich bleibe dabei: ein Teil wie "Stabwound Orgasm" schreibt man wohl nur einmal in seiner Karriere!
"Deathgeneration" bietet einerseits eine gute Seite, um hier mal tiefer in den Backkatalog einzutauchen, was gerade für neue Hörer interessant sein dürfte. Anderseits wurde das Material in einer vorbildlichen Produktion verpackt, weshalb der erste Teil auch amtlich ballert. Der zweite Silberling birgt dann alle Tracks noch mal, diesmal aber in den originalen Aufnahmen, die da mitunter mächtig in den Keller gehen, anderseits aber auch einen gewissen Charme präsentieren. Also an Durchschlagskraft haben Avulsed fraglos schon lange zugelegt, weshalb am Ende alle Death Metal Freaks hier unbedingt mal reinhorchen sollten.
Metal maniacs, rejoice! I'm proud to present to you: AVULSED; signed via Xtreem Music, hailing from Spanish grounds – performing Death Metal, on their 7th album entitled: “Deathgeneration”. (Released on November 1st, 2016)
Since formation in 1991; the quintet in question have 6 albums behind them, I'm introduced to their 7th “Deathgeneration”. Going in with the highest of expectations; I expected a typical slab of solid Death Metal, and that's exactly what I got. Right off the earphones; “Amidst The Macabre” (an instrumental) inaugurate us to what's in store, following into “Stabwound Orgasm” - I evaluate an augmented discovery that AVULSED incorporate the deadliest of Death Metal that one could possibly wish for. Not only that, celebrating their 25th Anniversary, the quartet celebrate this occasion and committed a very ambitious project – with a double disc release including 18 of their best songs from all their albums, EPs, and demos. But to make this release surprisingly interesting; the band also includes a total of 16 guest vocalists from infamous bands such as VADER, NAPALM DEATH, AT THE GATES, ABORTED, DEMILICH, AUTOPSY, GOD MACABRE, PENTAGRAM CHILE, MASSACRE, PAGANIZER, SINISTER, PURTENANCE, MORTICIAN, SUPURATION, INTERMENT & DETERIOROT. As a Death Metal purist; I was immediately excited as soon as I researched this unprecedented intricately designed creation. As soon as I hit the next track “Breaking Hymens” featuring Per Boder from GOD MACACRE, I was struck with a fierce production in Death Metal history.
“Sweet Lobotomy” (featuring Chris Reifert from AUTOPSY), “Burnt But Not Carbonized” (featurin Antti Boman from DEMILICH) & “Daddy Stew (featuring Svencho from ABORTED) equally showcase complex distinctness with coordination from Dave Rotten on vocals who unleashes some of the most deeply performed guttural growls I have heard in Death Metal hands down. The dexterous duo “Cabra” & Juancar on guitars formulate an eccentric pummeling; exercising the most extreme riffs of distinct intentions to deliver an efficient collaboration that unites an organic aesthetic to the sound production as well as songwriting proficiency. “Addicted To Carrion” (featuring Will Rahmer from MORTICIAN), “Dead Flesh Awakened” (featuring Rogga Johansson) & “Powdered Flesh” (featuring Ludo Loez) energize for prominent Death Metal that's built for the ages.
The enlightening powerhouse of Tana on bass and Arjan van der Wijst on drums contributes sufficiently well with flair to this destructive sound production that was built with masterful adroitness. “Gorespattered Suicide” (feat. Mike van Mastrigt), “Nullo (The Pleasure Of Self-Mutilation) [feat. Johan Jansson) & “Exorcismo Vaginal (feat. Paul Zavaleta) compose some incredibly memorable and original Death Metal, and while giving you such an energetic boost of brutalization to get you through the day…elements at greatness in my book. “Carnivoracity” (feat. Anton Reisenegger), “Sick Sick Sex” (feat. Ville Koskela) & “Devourer Of The Dead” (feat. Tomas Lindgren) extends this adapt display of showmanship with exquisite brutality Death Metal fans will ultimately relish tenfold. And so disc 1 ends with “Horrified By Repulsion” (feat. Kam Lee), “Blessed By Gore” (feat. Bongo) & “Red Viscera Serology” (feat. John McEntee).
Disc 1 serves as a revisited, re-versioned compilation of best of tracks in their legacy while disc 2 holds as the originals of the remade tracks in disc 1. Complicated? Not really. Just a little confusing. AVULSED consistently distribute with divine clarity towards the sub-genre with elegant precision; as a Death Metal maniac, I am compelled to say that this release gets the utmost respect and certainly deserves recognition. This acquisition has earned them a new fan!
Death Metal has been around for a long time, it has changed in many different ways, and developed in many different directions. Some bands mutate beyond recognition, others disappear. And then there are those that remain and hold the banner high, neither stagnating, nor losing themselves in other genres. As we at Archaic Triad prattle on about our precious #OldSchoolDeathMetalRevival2017 hashtag, it may be time to remind ourselves that some old school death metal never disappeared in the first place. Deathgeneration, the 25 year anniversary album of Spain’s death metal flagship Avulsed, is perhaps the best imaginable reminder of this important fact.
We are a few months late with this review, but hey, what do you want? We weren’t around when Deathgeneration was released in November 2016. It is still important that we write about it, since just like Avulsed as a band, this is something great that has been just slightly overlooked. The album, which is extremely ambitious in scope and concept (we’ll get to that soon), was paid for with the help of the kickstarteresque site Indiegogo, in a fundraiser that collected 18,510 Euros in short order. Unfortunately it appears precious few of those backing this effort belonged to the cultural literati, for there has been a shocking lack of reviews and online discussion about this double CD of Spanish filth and brutality.
Now a few words about the structure of Deathgeneration, which is a “Best of”, of sorts. One of the CDs contains eighteen Avulsed tracks, picked from their entire career. The songs have been re-recorded with the present-day Avulsed line-up and production, and feature a long row of guest vocalists. Chris Reifert of Autopsy, Tomas Lindgren of At the Gates, Bongo of Necrophiliac, and many others give their vocal interpretation of one song each. That’s not all, though. As Avulsed point out in the booklet, in words that could be directed right to Archaic Triad, they are aware that “there are a few freaks out there that don’t give a shit about re-recorded stuff and they always prefer the originals.” And since the band members “don’t want to hear complaints or cries”, they’ve included a second CD with the original versions of the songs, in chronological order.
Now, to say that we don’t care about the re-recorded versions at all would be an exaggeration – it’s obviously great death metal, and the wide array of vocal styles applied to the sound of one single band is interesting as well as original. Even so, we will admit that it is the second disc that brings us unadulterated joy, and that we would actually have complained and cry at least a little if it hadn’t been included.
Avulsed have chosen not to master or remix the old tracks, but just to adjust the levels to make the volume even. This means that you get an 18 track journey through the history of the band – from the awesomely dirty sounding demo track “Addicted to Carrion”, to the finishing, more technical (but still very brutal, classic death metal) of “Red Viscera Serology”. In some ways, it is also a journey through different periods of death metal history, since Avulsed have always staid on top of things, without losing their particular identity. There is some grind, there is some “slam”, there is a ton of awesome death metal riffing, ranging from traditional brutal butchery, to surprisingly melodic patches. The widely varying production types are also very exciting – one really has to listen to the disk from beginning to end to understand what we even mean by that. If you have the spare cash and like death metal, you are very likely to want to get your hands on at least a couple of Avulsed’s old releases after working your way through this awesome compilation. And may God strike me down if those vocals aren’t among the best in the genre.
Deathgeneration comes with a smashing looking booklet, with loads of old photos, credit lists as long as your arm (including lists of fans who contributed towards the cost of the release), all lyrics and a generally gory, deathmetally look that should satisfy any fan of the genre. At below 13 Euro for a double digipak CD, or 28 for a the vinyl DLP version + the CDs, you’ll really have to do some digging to find a better death metal deal.
AsĂ, el primer compacto (CD 1, the recordings) goza de un sonido especialmente potente y claro, beneficiándose de la grabaciĂłn de Dani Blanco (La Casa del Ruido Studios), la captaciĂłn de baterĂas y producciĂłn de Andy C. (Blood Cadillac Studios) y la masterizaciĂłn de Dan Swano en Unisound (Suecia). El equilibrio es soberbio, en todos los aspectos, ofreciendo un material de muy buena calidad que además logra captar la mejor esencia y todo el feeling del quinteto. Salvando las dos primeras piezas, la instrumental “Admist the Macabre” y la inevitable o consiguiente “Stabwound Orgasm”, en la que solo canta Dave Rotten, el resto de tracks implican a numerosos vocalistas invitados: desde mĂticos como Kam Lee o Anton Reisenegger al propio Bongo, de los sevillanos NECROPHILIAC. Cada cantante aporta su rango caracterĂstico, compartiendo rol con el vocalista original y logrando ofrecer una experiencia muy abierta y más que positiva, redondeando y pincelando unas canciones cuya frescura y solidez son elementos para remarcar. No obstante, para el tema “Nullo (The Pleasure of Self-Mutilation)” se ha contado con la colaboraciĂłn del guitarrista VĂctor Blanco.
Como contrapartida, el segundo disco (CD 2, the originals) contiene los mismos tracks pero en orden cronolĂłgico de facturaciĂłn, y en sus versiones originales: desde “Addicted to Carrion” hasta “Red Viscera Serology”, lo que de alguna manera, en cuanto a estilo y producciĂłn, permite al oyente poder seguir las evoluciones musicales de AVULSED en la lĂnea de tiempo, al menos respecto a los cortes escogidos y a las diferentes etapas a las que los mismos representan. En definitiva, el segundo CD nos ofrece el tĂpico compilado de canciones, pero como un perfecto aditivo extra que se integra plenamente en esta ediciĂłn de lujo.
La impronta de los lápices pertenece al mĂşsico y excelente artista gráfico Daemorph (Evil Art Dominion), mediante una escena detallada y compleja que al mismo tiempo representa perfectamente el espĂritu del lanzamiento. Posiblemente, la versiĂłn en vinilo ganará muchos puntos en lo puramente visual, dada la mejor apreciaciĂłn de los mĂşltiples detalles contenidos en su verdosa y macabra obra de arte.
25 años llevan en la espalda una de las bandas nacionales más brutas, campechanas y cochinas que conozco. Ellos son AVULSED y para quien no los conozca que no se sorprenda al ver una batalla campal en sus directos.
Death metal de la vieja escuela con letras de doble rombo y una martillada en la cabeza a nivel instrumental. Este “Deathgeneration” nos trae un doble disco; por un lado un recopilatorio de quitarse el sombrero de estos 25 años. Temas originales que nos muestran un avance en el tiempo en orden cronológico; un paseo por la producción y calidad de toda la experiencia de estos animales musicales.
El primer disco ya es la guinda del pastel, compuesto por exactamente los mismos temas que el segundo, con la ligera diferencia de que han sido regrabados de cero y con una colaboración en cada uno de ellos que junto a David Rotten hacen de este nuevo trabajo una delicia para los seguidores más fieles de la banda, además de ser una gran oportunidad de acercarse a la banda y ver una degustación de toda su carrera.
La banda lanzó un Crowfunding para sacar este proyecto adelante, con infinidad de regalos a los participantes, un digipack alucinante con un packaging espectacular y muy detallado. Además la grabación desde cero de estos temas nos aporta una frescura y un sonido perfecto nunca antes escuchado en un trabajo de la banda. A quien piense que es una treta para sacar cuatro perras no tiene ni golfa idea.
Lo dicho, doble CD ambos discos con los mismos temas, pero en el segundo son los originales en su orden cronolĂłgico. Yo personalmente voy a cepillar el primero, que han invertido mucho tiempo, esfuerzo y pelas para que solo se quede como un recopilatorio.
Os dejo algunos nombres para que imagineis la orgĂa de voces que han montado en este disco tan especial: Svencho (ABORTED), Per Boder (GOD MACABRE), Tomas Lindgren (AT THE GATES), Chris Reifert (AUTOPSY), John McEntee (INCANTATION), Antti Bomann (DEMILICH), Mike Van Mastrigt (ex SINISTER), Johan Jansson (INTERMENT), Kam Lee (ex MASSACRE), Bongo (NECROPHILIAC) más los que faltan por no hacer esto una lista de la compra.
Conforme arranca la instrumental de “Amisdst the Macabre” ya te corta el cuello la calidad de grabaciĂłn de este álbum, lo dicho, tocadas desde cero aumentan muchĂsimo la calidad de los instrumentos, la fuerza del sonido, los doble bombos machacones y un bajo con un volumen más elevado de lo habitual en la banda. Se agradece para quienes como yo tiran del bass a saco.
En el tema de las voces es complicado entrar porque supongo que a todo el mundo no le gustará las 16 colaboraciones, siempre hay quien una banda sĂ… pero otra no… A mi sinceramente me han gustado en su mayorĂa, desde las voces rasgadas hasta las de gorgoritos… pasando por los gorrinillos en algunos fragmentos.
Temas relativamente modernos del 2009 e incluso del 2013 se hacen más contundentes y trabajados en cuanto a calidad de sonido; “Nullo (The Pleasure of Self-mutilation)”, de 2009 la ya citada “Breaking Hymens” Y “Horrified by Repulsion” son ejemplos claros.
Hay que destacar que mucho artista pero no nos olvidemos del original. David Rotten sigue a pie de guerra, una de las figuras más representativas del Death Metal nacional y el Ăşnico fundador original de AVULSED que sigue en la banda. Su voz gutural sucia, cavernosa y brutal, cambiando del gutural de ultratumba al chillido de un cerdo degollado tan caracterĂstico del Grind sigue estando presente y se fusiona con la de los invitados dándole ese toque tan especial a este trabajo de 25 aniversario.
En resumen, este es un trabajo que no solo un seguidor de AVULSED deberĂa tener, sino todo aquel que sea capaz de valorar la carrera de una banda que lleva repartiendo cera 25 años en un panorama para nada fácil. El hueco y nombre lo tienen, y ganado con sudor y esfuerzo, si alguien cree que a bandas como AVULSED se les regala algo, lamento decirle que no tiene ni puñetera idea de mĂşsica.
Grandes AVULSED y gran decisiĂłn al sacar adelante este “Deathgeneration”, yo lo tengo apuntado en discos pendientes para sumar a mi pequeña colecciĂłn en fĂsico. Sin duda alguna el 9 se lo llevan a casa.
Tan pronto supimos que Avulsed habĂa iniciado una campaña de crowfunding para editar este disco doble celebrando sus veinticinco años de vida decidimos apoyarlos desde esta web. No es que tengamos muchos fondos, de hecho lo que estamos en el fondo somos nosotros, pero si hay alguna razĂłn por la que luchar es por mantener la llama de la mĂşsica.
Y si a esa utopĂa agregamos el cochino materialismo, a saber, que Avulsed siempre ha hecho trabajos muy detallados, que el digipack estarĂa de lujo real, que las fotos serĂan perfectas, el diseño majestuoso y la grabaciĂłn de primera, más diversos regalos por participar (camisetas, postales, fotos firmadas, pĂşas, discografĂa, etc) nos enganchamos al carro. Bandas con menos historia hacen campañas más rácanas, pero eso es otra historia.
Doble CD, cuyo segundo disco son las mismas canciones que el primero, en versión original y en orden cronológico, Pero perdónenme los puristas, yo me quedo con el disco uno, ese que muestra a los Avulsed de 2016 y que además tiene un montón de vocalistas invitados, señal de que en la escena más extrema hay muy buen rollo y amistad real, porque si la banda fuera a pagar todas las colaboraciones, hubiera hecho falta más dinero.
Otro detalle interesante del CD ya lo mencionamos. 16 vocalistas invitados que por momentos le dan un toque distinto a algunas canciones. Si bien hay algunas afamadas gargantas como las de Chris Reifert de Autopsy, Snencho de Aborted, John McEntee de Incantation, encuentro que las interpretaciones más viscerales provienen de vocalistas a los que no habĂa prestado mucha atenciĂłn en el pasado.
Pasan las canciones, vamos atrás de nuevo, saltamos una pista hacia adelante, comparamos con los originales, y al final el resultado es el mismo. Veinticinco años no han pasado en vano, la experiencia gana.
Asà que en definitiva, y por no enrollarme más, “Deathgeneration” es un álbum que todo fan de AVULSED debe tener, y no solo ellos. Lo recomiendo encarecidamente a aquellos despitadillos que aun no se han enterado de la pedazo banda que tenemos en España, a aquellos que aun van con el aburrido sermón de que todo lo hecho más allá de nuestras fronteras es mejor y a cualquier amante del Death Metal en estado puro en general, porque eso es precisamente lo que representa esta banda y lo plasma perfectamente con este disco, Death Metal brutal, directo, sin contemplaciones y de calidad inmensa.
No hay un solo tema malo, ni siquiera regular, son todos increĂbles, pero el nivel de adrenalina segregado con “Breaking Hymens”, “Blessed By Gore”, “Dead Flesh Awakened” y “Nullo” no tiene nombre!!!
“Deathgeneration”, el nuevo trabajo de AVULSED, es la celebraciĂłn de los veinticinco años de historia de una banda mĂtica y que siempre ha estado ahĂ; toda una vida dedicada al Death Metal
La idea empezĂł en verano, cuando AVULSED lanzĂł una campaña de “crowdfunding” con el objetivo de buscar mecenas que colaborasen en la idea de “Deathgeneration”. Se buscaba regrabar temas de la trayectoria de la banda, con la formaciĂłn actual (dejando a un lado el puesto de baterĂa que ha sido cambiante desde que se fue Furni, estando ahora un genial Arjan van der Wijst de FROZEN DAWN, la banda se ha mantenido constante desde la entrada de Tana en el bajo en 1998) y un sonido uniforme, mostrando la evoluciĂłn que estos temas han tenido con el tiempo, madurándose en directos y ensayos hasta ser propios totalmente. Pero esto serĂa algo muy “tĂpico” asĂ que Rotten tirĂł de agenda y aprovechando la cantidad de bandas con las que mantiene contacto y el hecho de que antaño en Repulse Records y ahora en Xtreem Music se mueve en los rĂos de las discográficas, consiguiĂł que en 16 de los 18 temas regrabados (es decir, dejando a un lado la intro y “Stabwound Orgasm”), colaborasen artistas variopintos.
